As a Seasonal Maintenance Assistant, you’ll be part of the team that keeps our community running smoothly all summer long. Assigned to one of our Parks, Streets, Stormwater, or Utilities divisions, you’ll gain hands-on experience maintaining and improving the City’s streets, parks, signage, sidewalks, trails, alleys, water systems, sanitary sewer systems, and stormwater infrastructure.
From freshening up neighborhood parks and ensuring safe, smooth roadways to helping maintain Waconia’s water supply systems, your work will make a visible impact every day. You’ll also collaborate with other City departments to support special projects, essential services, and community needs — meaning no two days are ever the same.
Hired applicants will be assigned to a specific division (Parks, Streets, Utilities, or Stormwater) for the majority of their work.
Schedule: Typical hours are Monday–Friday, 6:30 a.m.–3:00 p.m.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Responsibilities vary by division assignment but may include:
General Operations
-
Operate pickup trucks and light equipment.
-
Use hand tools and power tools safely and effectively.
-
Utilize digital mapping and work management tools.
-
Perform inspections and routine servicing of equipment.
-
Assist other departments as needed to support City operations.
Parks Division
-
Maintain turf, mow, trim, and care for lawns and grounds.
-
Flood ice rinks (seasonally).
-
Open and close park buildings.
-
Perform parking lot maintenance.
-
Assist with tree planting, pruning, and maintenance.
-
Clean buildings (windows, restrooms, floors, garbage removal).
-
Perform basic building maintenance such as painting and carpentry.
Streets Division
-
Rake materials and maintain road surfaces.
-
Clean catch basins.
-
Shovel hot blacktop, rock, and gravel.
-
Maintain signage and sidewalks.
Utilities Division (Water & Sanitary Sewer)
-
Inspect, test, operate, and repair fire hydrants, valves, and related equipment.

Conduct preventative maintenance on municipal water systems:
-
Flush water mains
-
Locate curb stop shut-off valves
-
Exercise valves
-

Locate water mains and valves per locate tickets.
-
Assist with sewer cleaning equipment (jet/vactor units).
-
Locate sewer mains and service laterals.
-
Perform preventative maintenance on sanitary sewer systems.
Stormwater Division
-
Inspect and maintain stormwater runoff systems.
-
Maintain surface water ponds and interconnected water management features.
-
Perform environmentally sensitive maintenance to meet regulatory standards.
Teamwork is essential in this role. While employees are assigned to a primary division, they may be called upon to assist in other operational areas as needed.
Essential Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of safe tool use and maintenance practices.

Knowledge of traffic laws related to operating City vehicles.

Ability to use proper personal protective equipment.

Ability to communicate effectively in person, by phone, or by radio.

Minimum Qualifications

Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.

Ability to perform all essential job functions.

Must successfully complete a criminal background check.

Subject to the City’s Personnel Policy.

This position is classified as Non-Exempt.
Required License
-
Valid Minnesota Class C Driver’s License (if over age 16).

Must pass a driver’s background check.
Desired Qualifications

Experience in parks, public works, utilities, landscaping, or related fields.
Physical Demands
This position requires significant physical activity. Employees must be able to:

Work outdoors in all weather conditions.

Lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds occasionally.

Stand, walk, bend, stoop, crawl, crouch, shovel, push, pull, twist, and reach repetitively.

Maintain balance on steep slopes and ladders (up to 10 feet).
-
Work around noise, vibration, heat, and moving equipment.
-
Meet specific vision requirements including close, distance, peripheral, and color vision.

Work Environment

Primarily outdoor work in varying weather conditions.

Frequent exposure to moving mechanical equipment and loud noise.

Occasional work at heights, on steep slopes, and around ladders.

Required use of personal protective equipment.
